The fire was not suspicious in origin, Edison Police Lt. Robert Dudash said.
The 72-year-old woman lived alone in the two-story house, Dudash said. Her name was not released pending notification of her family. The woman was found in an upstairs bedroom and pronounced dead at the scene, Dudash said.
The cause of the two-alarm fire remains under investigation, Dudash said.
More than 20 firefighters responded to the two-story home after a passerby called to report seeing flames at 6:58 a.m., Dudash said.
Mutual aid was provided by South Plainfield firefighters.
Initial unconfirmed reports said that one person was trapped in the house on Inman Avenue.
